What is Intel AI OS? #
Intel AI Systems OS is an open-source, AI-native operating system purpose-built for the edge. It unifies Intel's silicon capabilities — NPU, GPU, and CPU — into a single managed runtime that makes deploying, running, and scaling AI workloads on local hardware as seamless as any cloud service. From a single developer board to a fleet of enterprise edge nodes, Intel AI OS puts you in complete control of your compute.
New to Intel AI OS?
Follow the quickstart guide to install the OS on your local device and run your first inference pipeline in under 10 minutes.
Get started → Install Intel AI OS →Core components #
Intel AI OS is composed of three tightly integrated layers:
-
Intel AI Runtime
A unified AI execution engine that abstracts over NPU, GPU, and CPU targets. Automatically schedules and distributes inference workloads across available silicon for maximum throughput and energy efficiency.
-
Edge Orchestrator
A lightweight Kubernetes-compatible control plane optimized for constrained edge hardware. Manages containerized AI services, model lifecycle, and rolling deployments across single nodes or distributed clusters.
-
EdgePass
A cross-platform secure client for your Intel AI OS devices. Provides zero-trust VPN tunneling, remote management, encrypted credential storage, and unified identity across your entire edge fleet.
Highlighted features #
Intel AI OS delivers a comprehensive stack designed to make on-device AI development fast, secure, and production-ready:
NPU-first acceleration
Automatic dispatch to Intel® Core Ultra NPUs via the OpenVINO™ runtime. Up to 10× lower power vs. GPU-only inference.
Zero-trust security
Hardware-backed attestation, encrypted keystores, and Tailscale/WireGuard mesh networking out of the box.
Modular model hub
Deploy LLMs, vision models, and speech pipelines from a curated, signed registry — or bring your own ONNX/GGUF weights.
Adaptive orchestration
Edge-native scheduler that gracefully handles intermittent connectivity, resource contention, and partial node failures.
Unified vector store
Integrated high-performance vector database for RAG, semantic search, and knowledge graph workloads — all local, all private.
Telemetry & observability
Real-time dashboards for hardware utilization, model latency, throughput, and thermal metrics across every node.
Single sign-on
One decentralized identity bridges every AI service, dashboard, and management console with OIDC-based SSO.
Developer SDK
Python, Node.js, and REST APIs with full OpenAI-compatible endpoint compatibility for rapid integration.
Key use cases #
-
Local LLM hosting Run Llama, Mistral, Phi, or Gemma locally on Intel NPU/GPU with minimal latency and full data privacy.
-
Industrial edge AI Real-time defect detection, predictive maintenance, and visual inspection — offline-capable, air-gapped ready.
-
Healthcare & clinical AI HIPAA-compliant on-prem inference for medical imaging, clinical NLP, and patient data pipelines.
-
Private RAG systems Build enterprise knowledge bases over internal documents without sending data to external cloud APIs.
-
Computer vision pipelines Deploy real-time object detection, tracking, and scene understanding at the camera — no cloud round-trips.
-
Smart home & IoT hub Centralize IoT device management with local AI processing for automation, voice, and anomaly detection.
Intel AI OS is hardware-agnostic but works best on Intel® Core Ultra (Meteor Lake+), Intel® Xeon®, and Intel® Gaudi® platforms. OpenVINO™ optimizations are applied automatically at inference time.
